Plastic Compost Bin

When you first get started with composting, you will likely be surprised at how many different types of composting products are available on the market. Not only are there plastic compost bins, but there are also many other types as well.

A plastic compost bin will generally work as well as any other type of product. In fact, you really do not even need to have any type of container at all to make compost, but in some situations it may be helpful to have a bin. For example, if you live in a neighborhood that is governed by a home owner's association, you may find that the HOA refuses to allow you to have an open compost pile. There can be many reasons for this. Usually, the HOA is concerned about the smell of the compost as well as the sight of an open compost pile. If that is the case, you do not have to forego the benefits of composting. A plastic compost bin can give you just what you need to compost while also meeting the regulations of most home owner's associations.

All that is needed to make a plastic compost bin is a large plastic barrel. Such barrels can be purchased in many locations, including salvage outlets. A large plastic tub would also work well for this purpose to make a plastic compost bin, provided that it has a lid that can be fitted securely. If the lid does not fit securely on its own, you may need to apply some duct tape.

Before adding the compost to the bin, you will need to allow for drainage. This can be accomplished by drilling a few small holes on the bottom of the plastic bin. Remember that compost should be damp and moist but it should never be allowed to become overly wet. Compost material that is too wet will become smelly and will usually take much longer to decompose. Drilling holes for drainage is essential.

That is all that is really needed to make a plastic compost bin. Check to make sure that the lid is fitted onto the bin securely to ensure proper heat as well as to prevent odors from escaping. You can then place your compost bin someplace inconspicuous. Check on it occasionally and make sure that it is turned frequently and before long you will have rich fertilizer to add to your gardening projects.
